The SPAB Lethaby Scholarship is the preeminent training programme for building conservation professionals in the UK. It comprises an intensive nine-month immersion in conservation philosophy, and the techniques and technology of historic building repair. Awarded one of three scholarships in 2006, Miriam undertook a 25,000-mile journey around the UK, visiting over 200 active heritage construction projects. Hands-on training gave her direct experience of traditional craft materials and techniques. The scholarship condensed a range of heritage construction experience that would otherwise take many years to develop. It also gave an overview of the British vernacular and demonstrated the importance of understanding the ‘spirit’ of place in the practice of architectural conservation.
